10th Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase:  Full Moon on Monday, November 14
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Taurus - Plant seasonal color, and leafy vegetables.
    • Spinach, lettuce, Chard and any other leafy vegetables can be planted in rectangular containers instead of in the ground. You’re now able to extend the homegrown vegetable season during the rainy season.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Harvest, weed, and control pests-
    • Green tomatoes can be ripened off the vine in a homemade ripening chamber. All you need is any size cardboard or plastic box with a lid. The tomatoes are placed on a pad of newspapers so they don't touch, covered with another layer of newspaper. The lid is placed on the box and stored in a cool location. You then check the box every five to seven days and remove those tomatoes that have turned red.
  • Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant for root growth and divide perennials-
    •   It is not too late to plant spring  flowering bulbs  in containers, Daffodils and Tulips  along with freesias and crocus do well in pots
Other Things To-do
  • It is time to take down, clean and store Yellow Jacket Traps for next year.  I’d empty the contents, throw away the cotton swab, rinse the trap out and let them air dry. Yellow Jacket hives are in decline. The workers and males are dying off naturally as the mating season has concluded while the queen(s) are getting ready to abandon their nest and hibernate for the winter.
  • And finally, now that the rainy season has begun you need to turn off your irrigation clock.
