Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase:  2nd quarter begins on January 5. -

• Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Aquarius 
  • Now thru February is the time to prune fruit trees and roses. Many garden centers will be having pruning clinics so check with your favorite garden center for their schedule of classes.

Later in the Week

• Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Cancer- Plant seasonal color
  • Fruit trees should be arriving this week at many garden centers. There are now Ultra and Genetic dwarf varieties available for planting in small yards.

Other Things To-do

• You need to remove any of the fallen leaves and/or other debris in the landscape that's has accumulated during the holiday period. If left, the matted organic matter becomes a good breeding place for problems later on.
• And finally, apply dormant spray to fruit, shade and flowering trees along with roses after they have been pruned.
