1st Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter, & the Spring Equinox begin on Monday, March 20
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Harvest,  plant tubers, cultivate, plant fruit trees
    • It’s not too late to plant potatoes. Seed potatoes are available online or at your favorite garden center. Potato Bags allow you to plant and grow them on a deck, balcony or patio.

Later in the Week

  • Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Prune, and fertilize
    • Hedges should be pruned often to keep them dense and compact. Your initial pruning each year should occur after the first flush of growth.
  • Wednesday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest,  weed, and control pests
    • Naval Oranges should be left on the tree if they are still sour. They remain hanging until they sweeten up. Also, the flowers and fruit set for the next crop will not interfere with the maturing oranges.
Other Things To-do
  • Florel Fruit Eliminator controls Mistletoe in deciduous shade trees. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant and if left uncontrolled will damage and maybe kill the tree. Florel separates the Mistletoe plant(s) from its roots and is reapplied every second to the third year.
  • And finally, the best way to clean the herbicide residue from a hose-end or tank sprayer is with Baking Soda. This is critical if you’re using the same equipment to apply both insecticides and fungicides. The Baking Soda will neutralize the herbicide residue preventing unwanted plant damage.
