Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: New Moon on Monday, March 27- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Prune, water, compost, and fertilize
- Now is the time to prune back Pyracantha for the fall berry crop. When pruned before the new growth flushes, the berries will form on the main sections of the plant instead of on the long arching and sometimes leggy branches.
- Mexican Sage, Artemisia and all varieties of Penstemon should be cut off at the ground. Each year, these plants develop their new growth from the base, not off any lateral branches.
Later in the Week
Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant seasonal color and leafy vegetables- It’s not too late to plant the cool season vegetables such as Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Swiss Chard, Spinach, and Lettuce.
Other Things To-do
- This is an excellent time to control Mistletoe in evergreen and deciduous shade trees with Florel Fruit Eliminator. Florel is sprayed on the clusters causing them to separate from the tree and drop to the ground. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant. Florel should be reapplied every three to four years.
- Coddling Moth Traps should be set out to monitor the adult activity and drench the soil around the base of each tree with Beneficial Nematodes. Coddling Moths is the cause for worms in apples and pears.
