Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Monday, April 3- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini
- Lemons, oranges, limes and other citrus are now fed monthly with Citrus Food through October. To avoid fertilizer burn, be sure to water the plants the day before or at least four hours before fertilizing and immediately afterward
Later in the Week
- Monday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant seasonal color
- Alyssum and Marigolds provide plenty of summer color and are somewhat effective in preventing pests in a vegetable garden.
Other Things To-do
- The rainy season is coming to a close so it’s a good time to check and repair sprinklers and drip irrigation.
- It’s not too late to start pole or bush peas from seed. They are best started in peat or plastic pots. With the weather warming up, place the pots outside where they get indirect or morning sun.
- It is now okay to cut off the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold at the ground. The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps and you encourage the new growth with an all-purpose fertilizer.
