Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday Moon in the sign of Pisces -
- Once you get your Christmas Tree home, make a fresh cut by removing at least an inch of the trunk unless cut at the time of purchase. A tree will reseal itself within 2-3 hours, so get the tree in a water stand ASAP. It takes a tree one to two hours to reseal itself.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday -Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant seasonal color
- Red and white Cyclamen and Zygocactus are available for the holiday decorating season. They're a perfect alternative to Poinsettias.
Other Things To-do
- Now is an excellent time to trim conifers like Junipers, Redwoods, Cedars, Pines, and others. Instead of disposing of them, use the trimmings in your holiday decorations. Once the holiday season ends, chop them up and throw them in your compost pile. Also, spray the needles and branches with Wilt Stop to keep the greens fresh.
- Garlic. Onion and Shallots are planted in the fall and winter to harvest after Memorial Day. They were available in at your favorite garden center. They planted two inches deep in rows four inches apart, and the rows spaced two feet apart.
