Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: New Moon, and  Saturday, March 29: Partial Solar Eclipse 3:47 am PDT
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aries -
    • The danger of frost has passed, so it's an excellent time to prune off any winter damage and encourage new growth by applying a balanced fertilizer. A simple way to determine which parts are damaged is by scratching the bark of twigs and stems with your fingernail. The tissue is still healthy if the area just beneath the bark is green.
    • It is now okay to cut off the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold at the ground. The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps.  You 

Later in the Week

  • Monday -Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Taurus  - Plant seasonal color and leafy vegetables
    •  Dahlia tubers can be planted in open ground or in containers. They are currently available at your favorite garden center and will bloom this summer. Additionally, you can plant petunias, vinca, lobelia, and other colorful flowers now, between the dahlia tubers for added visual appeal.
  •  Wednesday-Thursday: Weed and cultivate
    • The area around newly planted trees and shrubs should be tilled or cultivated regularly. This prevents the soil from forming a crust and deters new weeds by disturbing the newly germinated weed seeds.
Other Things To-do
  • Mexican Sage, Artemisia, all ornamental grasses, and all varieties of Penstemon should be cut off at the ground each spring. Each year, these plants develop their new growth from the base, not from any of their lateral branches.
