3rd Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest and cultivate
    •  It's not too early to avoid any unwanted vegetation from the rains and warmer temperatures. You can manually cultivate them with a hoe or use a herbicide like Round-Up or a similar product. In cooler temperatures, it takes almost four weeks before they show the effects of the herbicide.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday - Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Transplant for root growth
    • The transplanting window is open for moving shrubs and other ornamentals. Also, container plants can be moved or root pruned.
  •  Thursday- Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Prune -
    • With the dry conditions, It's an excellent weekend to prune fruit trees and roses and apply your first dormant spray or oil.
Other Things To-do
  • Blueberries are available now and are an excellent companion plant for Azaleas, Camellias, Hosta, and others in shady areas. Blueberry plants should yield 3 to 6 quarts of berries per year.
  •  When recycling clay and plastic containers, it's wise to sterilize them first to clean up any overwintering diseases. It would help to wash the containers in warm water and bleach, one part bleach to nine parts water. Also, you can use a moistened rag, wipe the container thoroughly with the solution, rinse well, and let it air dry before replanting.
  •  Finally, horseradish roots are available at your favorite garden center but avoid planting them in the open ground. It spreads rapidly and is not easily contained. Instead, plant it in a pot or container.
