Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon Wednesday, February 12: Friday, February 14, Valentine's Day
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Good Weekend for planting
- Ultra Dwarf Fruit Trees are perfect for small yards. You’ll find Apricot. Cherry, Plum, and other varieties for your home orchard. They can also be planted in containers.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Taurus/Gemini - Weed, cultivate, and control pests
- It is getting close to the critical 'Popcorn or Pink Bud Stage' with Peach and Nectarine trees. The last application of Copper Spray for Peach Leaf Curl occurred just before this.
Other Things To-do
- All forms of Crape Myrtles should be pruned at this time of the year. Many gardeners forget that those round, brownish clusters are last year's dried-up flowers and should be removed. Crape Myrtle doesn’t self-shed the old flowers. After pruning, feed Crape Myrtle with an all-purpose fertilizer to encourage the new growth. Crape Myrtles only bloom on the current year's growth
- Asparagus is harvested when the spears are six to seven inches long and wider than a half inch.
- Starting with seeds, tomatoes, peppers, squash, and others is not too early. Start your seeds in pots indoors. The seedlings that have germinated now will be ready to set out into the open ground in the middle of April. You should pre-moisten the soil before sowing as the dry soil is hard to get wet, plus you disturb the seed placement.
