Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.Lunar Phase: Full Moon on Tuesday, February 19 Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Cancer: Plant Seasonal color Now is an excellent time to replant color bowls with Cinerarias, Iceland Poppies, Primulas and Primroses for some very different color combinations
Later in the Week
- Tuesday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Virgo/Libra - Harvest cultivate, weed, divide perennials and plant for root growth
- With the longer days. the unwanted vegetation, aka weeds, are starting to accelerate their growth. So, now is the time to control them before they get out of control.
Other Things To-do
- A variety of different fruit trees can be incorporated in small gardens by planting three trees in one hole. These trees are spaced two feet apart in a triangle. Although they will have three separate trunks, you will prune them like there was only one canopy, so it is important to have compatible trees in the same hole.
- And finally, with spring right around the corner, encourage the flush of spring growth by fertilizing ornamental trees, shrubs and ground covers with an all-purpose fertilizer. One application is all that is necessary for the year.
