Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Wednesday, October 24Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces: Plant Seasonal color For fall color, consider planting Raywood Ash, Liquidambar (pictured above), or Red or Japanese Maples. When considering trees avoid planting on a fence line. With half the tree on your side and the other half on a neighbor's, you can avoid neighbor disputes in future years.
Later in the Week
- Thursday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Taurus: Divide perennials Bearded Iris along with many other perennials are divided in the fall. Those divided now will bloom the following spring.
Other Things To-do
- Get a head start on all those unwanted weeds next spring by spraying the ground with Weed Impede. Weed Impede is a pre-emergent herbicide that kills the weeds seeds before they germinate. It can be safely sprayed over and around any rooted trees, shrubs, and ground covers without damage. It is also, safe enough to use around bulbs.
- And finally, With the leaves falling, it is time to clean out your gutters of all the debris that has gathered. You might look to install gutter screens as this will keep them clean and clear all year long.
