Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Happy New Year
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Weed, cultivate and control pests
- You must remove any fallen leaves and/or other landscape debris accumulated during the holiday. The matted organic matter becomes a good breeding place for problems later if left in the garden.
- Apply dormant spray to fruit, shade, flowering trees, and roses after they have been pruned.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Plant for root growth
- Horseradish roots are available for planting, but plant them in containers. When planted in the open ground, they become an invasive pest.
Other Things To-do
- Now through February is the time to prune fruit trees and roses. Many garden centers will have pruning clinics, so check with your favorite garden center for their class schedule.
- If not this next next for sure : move all the holiday cedar, pine, and spruce trees outdoors in four and six-inch pots. Once outside, please give them a good drink of water, hose off the foliage, and remove the holiday decorations and wrapping.
