7th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Saturday, February 24
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest and cultivate
    • You can extend the blooming season of Sweet Peas by removing the seed pods. You also increase the stem length by applying one pound of fertilizer per ten linear feet of plants.
    • Broccoli is best harvested by cutting the stalk with a pair of scissors.

Later in the Week

  • Monday and Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Plant seasonal color
    • It's not too early to apply snail bait, even if you haven't planted yet,. Going after the breeding areas like ground covers, under decks and porches, or any cool, damp, and dark area is essential. A handheld spreader is an excellent way to distribute the snail bait in these areas. You can now reduce the assembling population to attack your yard and garden.
  •  Thursday and Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant and transplant
    • Asparagus roots are available for planting at your favorite garden center. Asparagus is a perennial vegetable that will produce for twenty years, so plant it in the back of your vegetable garden.

Other Things To-do
  •  For a unique look, sow California Poppy seeds into existing containers. The feathery foliage and bright orange flowers have a dramatic effect.
  •  Finally, to help preserve the color of poinsettias, increase the light. At this time of the year, they can tolerate all day sun.
