Last Weekend On The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase:4th Quarter begins on Sunday, May 26
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Prune water, compost and fertilize
    • Flowering vines are pruned after they have finished blooming. I'd prune them back aggressively so they don't overtake an area.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius/Pisces-Harvest, cultivate, weed and control pests
    • Any tomato plant(s) that seems to be struggling or growing slowly should overtake. . These plants will never catch up and be a top producer.
Other Things To-do
  • It's time to reconstruct the water basins around trees and shrubs. A traditional watering basin should extend from the trunk of the plant to just beyond the drip line. On a slope be sure that the basin is higher on the downside to catch and hold the water. With warm temperatures, it's important that the water penetrates the root ball and doesn't roll away.
  • .And finally, it's time to thin the fruit on Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, and Apricots. They are thinned leaving enough space for each fruit to develop. The area should be equal to four times the size of the mature fruit. Also, you can have fruit maturing on both sides of a branch. Fruit tree thinning is important to prevent limb breakage, while it improves the size and quality of the fruit.
