Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Wednesday, August 16
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Fertilize and water
- The best time of the day to water is in the morning as the temperature is rising. Also, plants should be watered four hours before fertilizing to prevent fertilizer burn during the summer months.
Later in the Week
- Ornamental grasses can be used as fillers, borders, or background plantings, or they may be grown as container plants, but looks aren't everything. The gentle waving motion of the grasses and the accompanying sounds create a very peaceful atmosphere within your garden.
Other Things To-do
- It's not too early to prevent the annual fall visit from raccoons by applying Beneficial Nematodes to turf and other areas that are perennial feeding grounds.
- Summer Squash is best picked early on. As they age, the skin hardens, seeds form, and the edible flesh is less favorable. Keep the vines gathered even if you cannot consume all the squash. Once the fruit is left to seed, the plant's energy and productivity will diminish.
- And finally, support the limbs of apples, peaches, pears, and others with ripening fruit; otherwise, you will break or crack the major limbs with the increasing weight of the ripening fruit.
