Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, June 11
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant seasonal color
- Zinnia, Vinca, Portulaca, and Salvia are the primary summer annuals that thrive in hot, dry conditions. Now is an ideal time to replace early spring flowers that struggle in the heat.
Later in the Week
- Wind is the primary pollinator for tomatoes. You can help pollinate tomato plants by gently flicking each bloom during the warmest part of the day or by shaking the tomato cages. The pollen is naturally sticky, which aids in its distribution.
- Nasturtiums, Geraniums, Asters, Petunias, Marigolds, and Lavender can be strategically positioned in your garden for non-toxic pest control. These companion plants help repel a wide variety of common pests.
Other Things To-do
- Mosquito season is about to begin. Add a quarter of a Mosquito Dunk for every five square feet of surface water in ponds, fountains, and birdbaths. Mosquito Dunks are environmentally safe for humans, birds, and fish.
- Use Grass-B-Gon, a selective herbicide that kills grass without damaging broadleaf ground covers, to control grassy weeds in ivy, ornamental strawberry, hypericum, and other ground covers, including Bermuda grass in junipers.
