Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Waning Half Begins on Monday, June 2
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Weed and cultivate
- Mulching is essential for today's gardens. It not only conserves moisture but also prevents unwanted weed seeds from germinating. A two-inch layer of any organic material will do the trick.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Libra - plant seasonal color
- Ageratum, Lobelia, and Alyssum are a few of the spring and summer flower annuals that can be planted with Parsley, Basil, Rosemary, and other herbs.
- For a summer-flowering vine, plant Clematis, Bougainvillea, and Honeysuckle. Don’t overlook Clematis as a mid-season blooming vine. Clematis prefers a sunny location, but its base and roots should be shaded during the heat of the summer.
Other Things To-do
- This is still a great time to plant watermelons, cantaloupes, and muskmelons. The key to growing good melons is plenty of sun, at least six hours, and a regular amount of water. It’s the water intake that increases the size of the fruit. However, too much moisture will cause the melons to crack and rot.
