Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Happy Easter- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant potatoes, harvest, prune
- When harvesting strawberries, a portion of the green stem should be left on each berry. Also, the berries should be stored dry, so don't pre-wash them; otherwise, they develop a gray mold.
- You should off the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold on the ground. The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps, and you encourage the latest development with an all-purpose fertilizer.`
Later in the Week
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius- Plant root crops
- When planting potatoes, use seed potatoes over supermarket potatoes,
- Thursday and Friday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Cultivate, weed and control pests
- The white foamy stuff on plants is from the Spittle Bug. It will be around for about a month and does minor damage to plants. It's not necessary to spray. Instead, wash them off with a stream of water.
Other Things To-do
- It's not too late to start pole or bush peas from seed. They are best started in peat or plastic pots. With the weather warming up, place the pots outside where they get indirect or morning sun.
- Finally, continue raking up the spent Camellia flowers under the late-blooming varieties. Good sanitation is the best control we have for Camellia Petal Blight.
