Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Father Day, Sunday June17: Wednesday, June 19; Juneteenth: Summer Solstice, Thursday, June 20, longest day of the year
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Seasonal color and herbs
- It’s time to remove the struggling spring colors and replace them with those that thrive with warm temperatures and long days. To extend the days between watering, use soil moist or a similar polymer should be added to the soil mix at planting.
Later in the Week
- Monday and Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Best planting days of the month
- Finally, to prevent water from rolling around and out the side of containerized plants, apply a wetting agent such as E-Z Wet. E-Z Wet breaks the surface tension, allowing water to penetrate the root ball of established plants.
Other Things To-do
- The Budworm season has begun with Geraniums and continues through September. To control the green worms, you need to check your plants regularly and spray with Captain Jack Deadbug Brew.
- If the leaves on your Rhododendrons, Photinia, Azaleas, Viburnums, and others are turning a distinct silvery color, you have a Thrip problem. It is the Thrip rasping month parts that cause the leaves to turn color Thrips are easily suffocated with Horticultural Oil but I would first pick off the worst of the leaves.
- June is the last month to fertilize turf until after Labor Day. Fertilizing during July and August is discouraged as fungus problems can develop from the lush growth
