Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Sunday, June 21: Summer Solstice and the Waxing Half begins
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant flowering vines
- Honeysuckle is an evergreen vine that is mostly overlooked. It likes a sunny location and is generally drought-tolerant, especially once established.

Later in the Week
- Monday -Thursday; Moon in the sign of Libra/Scorpio - Plant seasonal color and corn
- Vinca Rosea, a pest-free summer annual, thrives in hot locations and requires minimal water once established. It’s an ideal replacement for struggling Pansies and Violas. It blooms through the summer and fall.
Other Things To-do
- To prevent water from rolling off the sides of containerized plants, apply a wetting agent such as E-Z Wet. E-Z Wet disrupts the surface tension of water, enabling it to penetrate the root ball of established plants.
- Established Cherries, Plums, Apricots, Peaches, and Nectarines require minimal watering during the summer months. Approximately every three to four weeks is sufficient from June through August. A six- to eight-inch-high watering basin should be established around the tree, extending from the trunk to the drip line. Furthermore, it is recommended to fill the basin to the brim twice during each watering session.
